Color and Data (the Planes Project)

Designs iterations

For the past two months I have been collaborating with Domani Turner-Ward on a sculpture to display the data from her investigation of chemistry in the sediments at the local shore. The studies we have been look at include measurements of nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate in transect extending perpendicular to the water line. These ionic and anionic compounds are found in anthropogenic runoff sources like agriculture and landscaping methods. They are tied to unmanageable harmful algal growths that have plagued the state over the past few years.

We are working on using this data to drive color spectrums in edge-lit acrylic panels. Our plan is a meter-long base with three ‘fins’ of acrylic. The shapes we designed were based on the shape found of the drop off at the waterline.
